HaMuch is Excellent

It’s important to feel safe in your own home, and locksmiths can help. As well as helping you get access back into your home when you’ve locked yourself out, they can also help you change your locks after a burglary, or help you rekey your locks. But how much will all this cost? Read our cost guides to get an idea of how much you should expect to spend.

Cheap locksmith cost

A cheap locksmith may cost as little as £25 per hour, but the average rate across the whole of the UK is £43. Jobs such as helping you get back in your house after locking yourself out may come at a fixed cost rather than an hourly cost.

If you’ve got a job that might take a long time, such as changing internal and external locks in multiple buildings, your locksmith might charge a day rate. The average day rate for a locksmith is £226 per day. If your locksmith does larger, more complicated jobs such as installing CCTV, the cheapest you should expect to get this for is around £500. If a locksmith charges less than this, be wary – they may not have the expertise or experience to do a good job.

Locksmith FAQs

Can a locksmith get into any door?

Locksmiths should be able to get into most doors. They have all the tools and equipment needed to open residential and commercial doors. Some of the locks that they can open include 3- and 5-lever mortice locks, euro cylinder locks with anti-snap, night latches and uPVC door locks.

Can a locksmith open a door without drilling?

Yes, a locksmith can open a door without drilling. In most cases, a skilled locksmith will be able to pick or bypass a lock with their specialist tools without needing to drill your lock, causing damage. This is great news, as it will cost much less for a locksmith to gain access to your home in this way rather than replacing the locks.

Can the police help if I’m locked out of my house?

The police won’t be much help if you’re locked out of the house. Unless there is a vulnerable person inside that needs immediate attention, you’re likely to have to wait a long time for police officers to arrive at your property, and even then they won’t have the equipment to gain access to your house without causing damage. They would most likely break a window to get into your home, and you would be liable for the costs of repairing the damage. It will be much cheaper to call a locksmith to gain access to your home, and will be much less disruptive too.
