{"id":339,"date":"2019-01-02T10:12:24","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T10:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/blog\/?p=339"},"modified":"2019-01-23T09:00:32","modified_gmt":"2019-01-23T09:00:32","slug":"banish-builder-cash-in-hand-payments-for-trades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hamuch.com\/blog\/2019\/01\/02\/banish-builder-cash-in-hand-payments-for-trades\/","title":{"rendered":"Banish Builder cash-in-hand payments for trades"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/\">HaMuch.com<\/a>&nbsp;announce New Year\u2019s resolution is no more cash-in-hand for builders<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Portable&nbsp;card machines have revolutionised payment for tradespeople<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Does away with the industry\u2019s reputation for tax-dodging<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building work pricing website\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/\">HaMuch.com<\/a>\u00a0is set to put a cat among\u00a0the\u00a0building site\u00a0pigeons by calling time on cash-in-hand payments for\u00a0plumbers, electricians and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/builder\/brickwork-pointing\/\">bricklayers<\/a> alike.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;bundle&nbsp;of&nbsp;used&nbsp;notes was once standard&nbsp;payment for tradesmen, but the website\u2019s founder&nbsp;Tarquin Purdie&nbsp;believes that abandoning cash&nbsp;payments for 2019&nbsp;will allow builders to&nbsp;fully&nbsp;embrace the 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;century and rescue the industry\u2019s reputation in one fell swoop.&nbsp;He is now calling for home-owners to reject calls for cash payment, even if that&nbsp;comes with a discount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not hard to see why builders have traditionally dealt in cash,\u201d says&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/\">HaMuch.com<\/a>&nbsp;Managing Director Tarquin Purdie. \u201cThey have to buy materials and pay sub-contractors and that was traditionally all done with cash. But now they buy on-account or with&nbsp;credit&nbsp;cards,&nbsp;and their sub-contractors or workers all have bank accounts. Many builders&nbsp;used cash work to stay under the VAT threshold \u2013&nbsp;and I have some sympathy with that for the one-man business \u2013&nbsp;but a good building business should be VAT registered nowadays, withthe&nbsp;accounting wherewithal to deal with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Purdie points to the prevalence of iZettle and other portable card readers among many&nbsp;tradesmen, with modern technology&nbsp;also&nbsp;allowing them to scan receipts and manage their money far better than their forebears.&nbsp;Tradespeople may have been seen as&nbsp;luddites in the past, but they now receive work via&nbsp;smartphone&nbsp;apps,&nbsp;advertise on social media and use WhatsApp to send images to customers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf they are offering you a substantial cash discount, then that is nothing to do with convenience&nbsp;or cashflow,\u201d says Purdie.&nbsp;\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/\">HaMuch.com<\/a>&nbsp;was founded to make pricing clear&nbsp;for customers and builders alike, but&nbsp;we understand some firms may offer a small discount to get the work.&nbsp;However, anyoneoffering&nbsp;as much&nbsp;10% or 15% cash discount&nbsp;nowadays&nbsp;is asking you to be complicit in tax-avoidance.&nbsp;It is as simple as that.&nbsp;Ask your tradesman for their bank account details, or simply use their card reader.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Purdie expects the growth of the \u2018cashless society\u2019 will see far fewer customers feeling the pressure to pay cash for\u00a0the likes of\u00a0plumbing,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/builder\/roof\/\">roofing<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/builder\/windows-glazing\/\">glazing<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/gardener\/\">gardening work<\/a>.\u00a0Although he\u00a0recognises that some tradesmen may be reluctant to let go of cash payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere will always be a handful of builders who&nbsp;want to have that roll of fifties&nbsp;to pull out in the pub on a Friday night,\u201d he says. \u201cBut more and more home-owners are&nbsp;joining up the dots between that cash discount and how the NHS or local services may miss out on the
