{"id":343,"date":"2018-10-17T10:22:55","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T09:22:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/blog\/?p=343"},"modified":"2019-01-23T08:53:38","modified_gmt":"2019-01-23T08:53:38","slug":"over-75-of-builders-have-charged-extra-to-homeowners-with-a-posh-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hamuch.com\/blog\/2018\/10\/17\/over-75-of-builders-have-charged-extra-to-homeowners-with-a-posh-name\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 75% of builders have charged extra to homeowners with a \u2018posh\u2019 name"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Pricing website\u00a0HaMuch.com survey shows 75.5% have charged customers more when hearing their \u2018posh\u2019 name.<\/li><li>81.5% of tradesmen charged\u00a0more after\u00a0realising\u00a0a\u00a0client lives in a fancy house<\/li><li>79% of builders have charged more when working in\u00a0an upmarket\u00a0area<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A new survey by tradesman-pricing website&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/hamuch.com\/\">HaMuch.com<\/a>&nbsp;has uncovered bad news for those called Tarquin,&nbsp;Rupert or Quentin, as&nbsp;more than three-quarters of&nbsp;builders&nbsp;admitted to charging&nbsp;them far more than Daves, Mikes and Deans.&nbsp;A&nbsp;slice of&nbsp;class war set in brickwork and cement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>75.5% of the tradesman questioned said that they have given a higher quote when the customer is a Henrietta, Harriet or&nbsp;Cassandra, with 51.5% saying they have added their \u2018posh&nbsp;name&nbsp;tax\u2019 many times.&nbsp;24% said they had boosted their prices once or twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey for&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/hamuch.com\/\">HaMuch.com<\/a>, which lets you see labour charges up front for over 12,000&nbsp;tradesmen and tradeswomen, also revealed that&nbsp;the place where you live could also see you charged more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly\u00a08-in-10\u00a0of the\u00a0UK\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/builder\/\">builders<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/plumber\/\">plumbers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/carpenter-joiner\/\">carpenters<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamuch.com\/electrician\/\">electricians<\/a> questioned\u00a0said\u00a0that they have\u00a0upped their prices\u00a0when quoting for work in what they perceived as an upmarket part of their patch.\u00a0Meanwhile, 81.5% admitted to having\u00a0inflated charges\u00a0when\u00a0realising the customer lived in a large or fancy house.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey certainly hit&nbsp;home for&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/hamuch.com\/\">HaMuch.com<\/a>&nbsp;founder Tarquin Purdie, who&nbsp;started the site&nbsp;in 2016&nbsp;to end rip-off pricing and&nbsp;had long-suspected he paid&nbsp;more for jobs around the house than his friends.&nbsp;It allows those searching for someone to work on their home to search by trade, price and area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing called Tarquin, I have definitely experienced the \u2018posh name\u2019&nbsp;trades&nbsp;surcharge,\u201d says&nbsp;Purdie. \u201cIt\u2019s not a big surpriseto me, personally. But our service&nbsp;now&nbsp;means that this&nbsp;can bea thing of the past, as&nbsp;the rates are there in black-and-white for you to compare before you get in touch with a tradesman. Good news for Tarquins&nbsp;and Henriettas&nbsp;everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was&nbsp;genuinely&nbsp;surprised by just how prevalent this over-charging has been,&nbsp;but I hope that more people will now start to research prices up-front and stop themselves being scalped.You will always get unscrupulous tradesmen, but those signing up to our website know that they are setting new industry standards in pricing transparency.
